The Troubles

I found this documentary on Google video. It's very looooong but extremely interesting. It has lots of footage of Ian Paisley and many interviews with people who lived through the troubles. It's in 8 half-hour segments.
The last six are here but in the extended entry. If you want to see this in full screen, go to google video and type "the troubles" in quotes. When you view it there you have the ability to do full screen.

I only really had the chance to watch the first two segments, but it is really interesting. Adding in the personal stories of witnesses is a good way to appeal to a broader audience in a more honest way. I did notice that the films cut out and possibly skipped some parts a few times? Otherwise, v. interesting. May check this out over break. It is surprising to see just how totally involved the PM for Northern Ireland is with the whole "never surrender" issues. I think there are a lot of parallels to the situation in Northern Ireland and the Jim Crowe laws of the old South, and South Africa's Apartheid. One question I had from class, was about the Bloody Sunday incident: I thought the Catholics were throwing stones in response to a Orange Order March when the shooting started, not marching themselves? Perhaps I am thinking of the 1969 riot? Not sure.

This is really chilling... it is just shocking to think that the black and tans could LEGALLY do something like that... I'm starting to regret what I said on the final about Ireland not being a colonial situation; Britain seems to only treats colonies so distantly and harshly.
