home milk delivery

This morning a truck labeled "MILK MAN" rolled down my street. Wow, I thought that home milk delivery was as extinct as wood tennis racquets. Seeing the truck brought back memories of the 70s, when my Dad would put a banged-up red cooler by the door the night before deliveries, and I would wake up early to try to spy on the milk man inserting ice-cold glass (!) bottles. In all the years of trying, though, I only saw him once or twice....

Growing up in the 1960's in a small, middle class town in N.J, I remember that part of my childhood experiences was when me & my buddies would "camp out" in someone's back yard & hear the milkman comming at about 4:00 AM. We checked out each home that had milk delivered, which was about 1/2 of the neighborhood, and there were about 5 or 6 different milkman. Sadly, as I grew up in the early 70's, there were suddenly no more milkman. I would think about that special time, and I thought it was gone forever. Well, the milkman is making a comeback! I saw a milk truck recently that said "home delivery in glass bottles". After calling the number, I now have my milk delivered once a week in 1/2 gallon glass bottles; I was like a little kid when he made his 1st delivery at 4:30 AM!! My wife & kids love the taste of bottled milk, and it makes me happy that I found something that I thought was gone forever. If you live in north Jersey, check out Suncrest farms in Totowa, N.J. Long live the milkman!! G. Handel.

I never had these sorts of experiences; we never had a milkman in our neighborhood. I knew something was missing from my life all this time.

Sounds like he was a bit of a Santa Claus for you!
