This morning I learned about the development of the city street system. Interesting stuff!

Having always been interested in the evolution of the city-space, and Minneapolis in general, this website (http://lileks.com) is full of great photos of Minneapolis history, under the "Urban Studie: Minneapolis" heading. The website is from the Star Trib columnist James Lileks. My favorite is the original Greyhound Bus Depot, made internationally famous in the Prince movie "Purple Rain," in its current state as First Avenue Night Club.
In case you weren't aware, the grid system of Minneapolis is not mirrored in St. Paul, whose curvy downtown streets follow different logic, leading the outspoken Gov. Jesse Ventura to famously attribute the origin of the design to the "Drunken Irish Settlers" that settled the area.
