golden week in may

I will get about a week of vacation in early May. I want to go to China but I can't afford the airfare during the high season (golden week in Japan is known as one of the busiest holidays here). I have very limited choices, it's either stay home to be like a douche bag or take a backpack trip around Japan. what should i do?
