humiliating nationalism?!

A United States Navy sailor was accused of beating death of a Japanese woman on Jan. 3 and confined on an American base near Tokoy. This time Japan's media and public response are rather apathetic when compared with the one happened a decade ago about three American servicemen who raped a 12-year-old girl on an American base in Okinawa. In 1995, there were 85,000 people marching one weekend, many demanding the expulsion of American bases from the island. One article in the New York Times suggests the changed attitudes of Japan has to do with the completely hostile nationalism against North Korea and China promoted in Japan's meida. The increasing concern about China's economic and military rise and North Korea made Japanese people believe it is neccesary to sustain the military relation with the U.S. If that is the case, we cannot help wondering how humiliating nationalism could be rather than glory.

Nation rumbles as millions head home for Lunar New Year

Traditionally in China, the Lunar New Year is a time for family reunion. Family members routinely return to their hometowns from the cities they work in.China's railway tracks are creaking, buses crawling ahead and planes burning jet fuel like there's no tomorrow.Millions of Chinese are heading home for Spring Festival, the biggest family holiday occasion of the year which falls on January 30. The number of passengers traveling on trains throughout China has hit a record high ahead of the lunar New Year holiday this year, state press said.

I just got my mom's email about her New Year trip to Shenzhen (the city in south coast area) this coming Tuesday by train. I cannot help worrying about her as I read today's news.
