« Boys on the Side | Main | To Olive... »

The film "Boys on the Side" presents female friendship in a way that we have yet experienced on our journey on the road. Jane, an empowered black lesbian answers the ad for a ride-share to California of Holly, a quirky white woman, suffering from Aids. The duo picks up another passenger in Pittsburgh when they stop at the home of Holly, a ditsy blond being abused by her boyfriend. The structure of the friendships in "Boys on the Side" is quite unique. We find out that Holly and Jane are long time friends, even though Jane is a lesbian, the friendship is strictly platonic. Later we find out that Jane had once been in love with Holly, but realized that she could not turn straight woman gay. While sitting in a diner, Holly reveals to Jane that "Yeah, but even with gay girls there are no guarantees. They're very emotional. That's about all I know. They love uniforms and don't break their hearts." This is pretty ironic, as Holly is the one who falls in love with a cop. When sitting in the hotel room Jane and Holly take in a quiet movie. When inquiring about Holly's past love life Jane state that maybe she is gay, to which Holly replies, "you mean, like, oh gross no". By the end of the movie when the Holly's health is deteriorating quite rapidly her mother comes to visit, and the two discuss the end of her parents marriage. Elaine explains to Holly that, "I do the best I can, honey. I know it's not enough, and I'm sorry. But that's what you get in life, you know? You get whoever you end up with. Whoever is willing to stick by you, and fight for you, when everyone else is gone. And it ain't always who you expect. But you just have to make do." I think this quote is the catalyst for the relationship that develops between Holly and Jane. We find Holly bed ridden in a hospital and it is Jane who is there next to her side. They speak of love, and Jane admits that she was, and still is in love with Holly. I believe that since her infection, Holly became disenchanted with the kind of 'love' a man could offer. This is evident when Alex tries so show his feelings towards her by "Fucking her brains out". She learns from her relationship with Jane that love can be something more, and that "there's something that goes on between women. You men know that because it's the same for you. I'm not saying one sex is better then the other. I'm just saying, like speaks to like. Love or whatever doesn't always keep. So you found out what does, if you're lucky." At the end of the filming when Jane is looking into Holly's eyes and singing, she is not only singing to her, but singing to the whole room. Letting everybody know how she feels about her and how far their love as gone. Jane would do anything for Holly, and likewise Holly would do anything for Jane. Love has no boundaries, and "Boys on the Side" defies social norms and shows that love between two women is no different that any other.
