"Disassociation is an intriguing starting point for analysis not only because it suggests the necessity of an imbalance between internal and external space but also because, in the context of the road movie, it highlights a juxtaposition between place-based sedentarism and disengaged mobility. On the one hand, . . . we have home-based masculinity and, on the other, resistance to mere adequacy through travel on the road. Traditional male masculinity is associated with the stability and lack of movement that is a result of providing for a family. The family is anchored by the male who works and provides for his family. Disengaged mobility replaces the place-identity with an identity that depends on the space being occupied. A characters identity is fluid as they move from one space to the next. In Priscilla, Tick exemplifies disengaged mobility. He travels from space to space and sometimes we see him dressed and acting like a stereotypical heterosexual man, and we also see him as a drag queen. Towards the end of the movie, he is talking with his son and trying to act like a stereotypical father. This shows how his identity is defined by the space he occupies and the influences of that space. The mobility of the characters in both "Priscilla" and "To Wong Foo" allows their identity to be fluid unlike the traditional white male whose identity is fixed by lack his of movement.
