Taking apart the federal budget
For my PA5003 class:
The Washington Post (02/01/2010) presented multiple charts exploring the various facets of the government's budget and see how revenues and spending have changed over time.
For example, the chart below depicts President Obama's FY2011 budget, which has a total amount of $3.8 trillion including $1.27 trillion deficit. Note that the size of mandatory spending is nearly about the total revenue -- that means, any discretionary dollar determined through the annual budgetary process pretty much comes from deficit spending.
Also worth checking out is an interactive visual presentation of the federal budget process (The Washington Post, 01/31/2010).
